Metropolia and Supersight partner to accelerate the development of Physical AI applications

Broad collaboration gives Metropolia the capability to operate, develop and apply Supersight’s privacy-first edge AI infrastructure across research, education and new real-world applications.

Helsinki, 28 September 2026 – Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and Finnish edge AI company Supersight have entered into a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development of new Physical AI applications.

The collaboration enables Metropolia’s researchers, teachers and students not only to use Supersight’s technology, but also to build new applications on top of the same reusable infrastructure.

Physical AI applications connect artificial intelligence with the physical world: they observe what is happening in real environments, transform those observations into structured information and connect the results to digital workflows, decisions and, where appropriate, automation.

From individual AI projects to reusable infrastructure

Supersight uses standard Android devices as programmable edge AI nodes. Computer vision runs locally on the device and produces structured metadata, while fleets can be remotely managed and observations connected to other systems through APIs. Software can then expand what organisations do with the same deployed infrastructure.

This allows new applications to start with the operational problem to be solved rather than with building the entire sensing, edge-computing and data infrastructure from scratch.

Metropolia as a platform user and application developer

Under the partnership, Metropolia will build the capability to provision devices, deploy machine vision models, use APIs and reporting tools, develop integrations and contribute to software development.

By developing our own capability to operate and extend the environment, we can move faster from an idea to a real-world experiment and involve students directly in developing new applications across different disciplines,” says Timo Roine, Ph.D., Head of Degree Programmes, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

Potential application areas include greenhouse automation, smart buildings, education environments, construction and infrastructure, industrial environments and public services.

Across these areas, physical-world observations can be combined with operational context such as schedules, capacity, process information or business KPIs. Supersight’s strategy is to make this connection increasingly repeatable across applications, portfolios and markets. This directly reflects the investor-deck framing that measurements become more valuable when connected to operational context and that this connection should become repeatable.

Innovation does not happen only in research laboratories: we have supported the completion of a new thesis project with Laurea University of Applied Sciences, where Aaro Pentikäinen examined how CRM data and analytics can be used to improve B2B sales conversion and support data-driven sales management in a growing technology company.

The work provided valuable insights into sales process development, CRM practices, and future opportunities for AI-assisted sales operations. Just as importantly, it gave a student the opportunity to work with business data, growth challenges, and a real international technology company.

City of Imatra Chooses Supersight for Large-Scale School Facility Utilisation Analysis

The City of Imatra has selected Supersight to deliver a large-scale utilisation and occupancy analysis.

The project is one of the most comprehensive educational facility utilisation studies carried out in Finland. During the six-month pilot period starting in August 2026, Supersight will monitor the utilisation and occupancy rates of approximately 200 spaces using 197 privacy-preserving AI sensors at Mansikkala School Centre and its early childhood education facilities.

Mansikkala School Centre is a unique educational environment. Completed in 2020, it is the largest wooden school building in Finland, serving approximately 1,350 children and young people from daycare through upper secondary education. The 15,300-square-metre campus also accommodates student welfare services, a public health clinic, adult education activities, and community organisations.

After several years of operation, the City of Imatra identified a need to better understand how the facilities are actually being used. The study will provide detailed insights into room utilisation, occupancy levels, visitor volumes, dwell times, and movement flows throughout the building. The results will help identify underutilised areas, peak-demand spaces, and locations that may require further analysis, enabling future decisions to be based on objective data rather than assumptions.

For public-sector organisations, understanding how existing facilities are used is increasingly important. Reliable utilisation data can support better space planning, improve operational efficiency, and help maximise the value of major infrastructure investments.
